Sorry for the late comment...but that's one hell of an essay. I applaud you for your fervor. You took a stand, defended it, and didn't back down. Impressive. Oh, and I absolutely agree with just about everything you said.

Enjoyed your essay, essentially agree with most of what you said.Minor point, one reason for larger sized humans has I think got to do with the food we eat or the healthy chices we have that our ancient ancesters were not exposed to.I like your guts in dealing with these big ontological issues.

I'm sorry for the shit you've been through. People can be really stupid and cruel sometimes. But thank you for sharing it with me. I hope you gain your self-respect back because you deserve it. <3

I believe in this.

Feb 28, 2008

[Disclaimer: After rereading this I realize it's really directed and offensive. I'm sorry. Please forgive me and see past it, and I'll try to edit it later.]

It really bugs me when people believe that creationism and evolution can never work together.

[One thing to get straight before I go on: science doesn't prove anything. Read that again. Make sure you get it. Science doesn't prove, it only supports. Science doesn't believe anything can be proven, just that it can be disproved. So don't even waste your time arguing "you can't prove anything with science!" Um, duh. I can only support my beliefs.]

I believe in the Big Bang Theory, evolution, and God.

I believe in the Big Bang Theory. Why? Mostly because of this.
You don't have to read all that. Basically:
...the COBE mission, which looked at the background microwave glow of the universe and found that it fit perfectly with the idea that the universe used to be really hot everywhere. This strongly reinforced the Big Bang theory and was one of the most dramatic examples of an experiment agreeing with a theory in history -- the data points fit perfectly, with error bars too small to draw on the graph. It's one of the most triumphant scientific results in history.
Also:
According to the Nobel Prize committee, "the COBE-project can also be regarded as the starting point for cosmology as a precision science."
So yeah. Don't even try to argue with that.
And besides, why is it so hard to believe that, oh I don't know, maybe God did it? So many creationists will believe in math and medicine but for some reason don't believe that God does any of it. He doesn't have to be some crazy mystical being, people, he might just know calculus.

I believe in evolution. Now I'm not going so far as to say we all developed from monkeys and shit, but dude. I believe God made Earth and other shit with the Big Bang Theory, then made some organisms that evolved and became everything today. I mean, stuff shows it. Come on. Look at the fossils and shit. Stuff changed.
And this is the biggie: for all of you that are like "the Bible doesn't say that!"... well, you know what? The Bible was written two thousand fucking years ago. You think people would have believed in it so much if God had been like "hey Peter, write this down: so I made the universe, this thing you don't know about yet, really hot, and it created this round planet.. oh yeah, you still think it's flat, um... yeah just leave that anyway, you guys will figure it out eventually... and um, you started as some organisms... oh wait, that word isn't invented for another thousand and a half years, um... and you guys evolved... yeah, you'll figure that out later too... and there were these dinosaur things, but you haven't seen them sooo... yeah.... umm..."
No! God had to tell the story to the people in a way they'd understand. Duh. The same way you don't give a six year old a college level book and say "this is what you should know." No! If they need to know it, you'll give it to them in six-year-old wording so they understand. And, you probably have to omit a lot.
That is truly what I believe about the Bible until something tells me better. I mean, it makes sense. Now I'm not saying the Bible is wrong, it's a great book with lots of great lessons and everything, but stop taking it so literally. I mean, seriously. It's not like it was even written in English, so you're not even reading the real thing.
Also, back to evolution, if you're one of those people who've seen that shit documentary that's like "why fossils disprove evolution," then seriously... no. That thing is just ridiculous. So a turtle hasn't changed for a million years. Maybe it doesn't need to? Maybe it gets along just fine the way it is? Look at all the shit that DID change. Like, oh I don't know, HUMANS? Even if you don't believe that we descended from Neanderthals, look at humans like a few hundred years ago. WE'VE GROWN. Beds used to be like 5 feet long. Now they're like 6 or 7.

And finally, I believe in God. I don't have anything scientific to be like "hey look, God exists," I just believe. Faith is a powerful thing when used for good. Even atheists have faith. It's just put into something else.
And as for Jesus? Honestly, I don't care to argue whether or not He existed. It really doesn't matter to me. What He stood for is enough for me to believe in. I mean, holy crap, to be nailed to a fucking cross and all these shitty people around you and to be like "Father forgive them, they know not what they do." Motherfucking genius, the level of unconditional love. That is just amazing. And I'll believe in that above all things.
