Thank you very much for your comment about my photo, yes they're totally oblivious to their environment, Pigalle.
What did you think about my city ten years ago?

A Moral Dilemma

Apr 27, 2008

It's appreciated when we support each other's creative works. It's understandable when such support becomes a bit personal at times, and includes advice. It becomes troubling when such support and advice becomes more personal, rather than the originally intended artistic critique. As artists we welcome the feedback, the interaction, the artistic and even personal opinions. Cause and effect blurs.

The more we share of our writing, our art, and our works, the more people we meet. As we meet more people we find ourselves interacting with certain people more than others. We like their work, we respect their opinion more. We respect their talent, we want to learn more. We like their choice of movies, music or interests, we want to compare and share more. Cause and effect blurs.

As artists, we mostly appreciate this support, opinion and advice, particulary from those who seem to understand us. As time goes on we expose our vulnerabilities, our feelings, our dreams, be they in the form of our works, our daily journals, or even in conversation. But, we don't really know what the artist was thinking, or feeling when the picture was taken, or the poem written, do we. We only know what we see, read or hear, sometimes from the artist himself. Cause and effect blurs.

We need to be careful to not cross certain boundaries with our support and advice. When the potential exists for us to infringe on someone's personal life, or the lives of others, we have a moral and ethical responsibility to back down. We'd like to believe our original intent was innocent, to be supportive, honest and heartfelt, as it usually is. Often times, as time goes on our interaction becomes more advisory, more personal. Cause and effect blurs.

As we learn more about the artist, his life, his family, we understand more and are better prepared to provide support and advice. The photographs become more real, the stories more relevant, the poems make more sense, the conversations more heartfelt. As our interactions become more frequent, our support and advice becomes more personal, and our vulnerabilites and dreams are shared more easily. We understand more about what the artist was thinking, the artist understands us. Cause and effect blurs.

At some point, the boundary gets crossed and a relationship ends. Which one? Cause and effect blurs.
