Absolutely not. My Pastor is a pretty well known Christian Music Artist and he says everyday the industry is hit by illegal downloading. It is effecting job-loss, it is providing less revenue for new potential artists... I've seen the direct effect on him, and I choose not to do it. Do I use itunes? Absolutely. I'm paying for the song. Contemporary Christian Music Magazine, which was around for like 25 years just went under and they report it has a direct effect with the loss of funds in today's Christian music industry. Maybe the big stars aren't going under, and maybe it allows for access to new desperate artists, but it's those trapped in the middle who are hurt the most.

Just because you don't have money for gas, doesn't mean you can stop at the gas station and get a gallon.

Ummm, you say worship leader that is well known ehh? Well for starters....they really shouldn't be caring about how much they sell with their music in the first place....otherwise your giving people the wrong idea about worship. Cause...well...honestly....why should people have to pay for a tool to Worship God?

Worship music should be worship music and not cost money in the first place.

However I still agree with Melissa when she states that...."The bands themselves" are making more money by people downloading their music and then getting interested in them by doing that.

Cause as I stated before....the bands get the majority of their money by traveling and doing Shows for people.

Melissa: April 14, 2008 - 02:54 PM PST Though I could go into greater detail, I'm just going to say this..

Without downloading music, I wouldn't listen to some of the bands I do today, and therefore would not have gone to their show and bought their merch there (Where bands make a greater profit than they do in retail)

They just made more money off of me because I downloaded their music.

A philosophical take -
I think there are some basic property rights that it is generally wrong to ignore, and this includes the evil money grubbing portions of the music industry. If we'll break the rights for them, what is going to protect copy rights, intellectual property rights for everyone else, with far less money to enforce those laws?
At the same time, once I actually BUY a song, I resent the idea that there's a limit to where I can play/copy it for my personal use, and same with a movie. I get that copying it off for 5,000 friends is wrong, but I would like to be able to use it something I bought on whatever devices I own or buy in the future without feeling like I'm stealing from anyone...so is THAT stealing? Is it reasonable that my payment is to listen to a song as many times as I want as long as I limit the number of devices on which I play it?

If you read the "Terms and Use" it usually says how many times you can copy it. Wal-marts is like 10-15 times.

ckwright: April 14, 2008 - 09:35 AM PST I find that as I've gotten older I've downloaded less and less music illegally. In fact I haven't downloaded any music illegally in a very long time. I don't necessarily think it's right, but I can understand the reasons for doing it.

I still download movies and TV shows, but that's because my schedule doesn't allow me to watch them when they are on live and my internet doesn't like the streaming web sites. Plus I buy anything that I really like anyway.

rianamix: April 10, 2008 - 01:32 PM PST As stated many times over....artists make their main bulk of money through their performances and selling their cd's at those performances. Along with the t-Shirts, and the other fun stuff. (BUTTONS MORE AND MORE BUTTONS)

Anyways, is it illegal to download music, yes if you don't have the rights to the music. As for the artists themselves....I really don't think they care as much about it since, well in all honesty...the more people download the music....the more they are getting their music out there for people to hear.

But that's just me....I really don't know what the artists are thinking cause....well I'm not them lol.

But I do agree that, the other people are just trying to squeeze out the most money they can get from people by making these kinda laws against downloading music.

Zeroth: April 10, 2008 - 12:46 PM PST Okay, no one's really answered your questions appropriately. Okay, first of all, all but the most profitable artists actually make money from their CD sales. Heres one relevant link that explains how the system works: How royalties work Another good link is this, by Courtney Love, explaining the real situation about royalties: Courtney Love's speech on royalties Warning, its quite long.

Now, as to the actual legality of downloading music: in the US there are laws that say one thing, and other laws that say other things. It is a very complex situation, and I am not a lawyer. Basically, right now, what is going on is a major battle royale between right to use, and the RIAA that wants to charge us every time we listen to one of their songs. They want people to pay for songs they already own(from CDs), claiming it is unauthorized usage. They use illegal legal tactics(for example, suing a tract of unidentified people, for the purposes of discovery, at which point they drop the lawsuit, and launch a new one to target the people found in the first illegal lawsuit. They sue grannies living on pension checks. And, the fees they get? Don't even GO to the artists! They are evil. 100% evil.), and bully and try to distort the law in their favor.

This is my suggestion: download whatever music you want, but pay the artist directly. Find their address, send them a check for five bucks. They'd make a lot less money if you bought one of their CDs. Keep a record of paying the artist. If possible download music through iTunes or Amazon. Both are legal venues, and the artists get a bigger share of the pie.

"Is it okay to legally drive a car when you have a drivers licence?"
"is it okay to sell your t-shirt which you own?"
"Is it legal to walk on the side walk with other pedestrians, just walking doing nothing special?"

i could go on, but won't for reasons of insanity. The possible one in her, and the onset of mine ...
