Chemical Reactions
Jun 28, 2008What is emotion? It's nothing really. Just chemical reactions like everything else. They are complex reflexes that we've tried to attach some sort of meaning to. I think we all know this but we pretend not to or we lie to ourselves about it. It's awfully funny actually to think about how important emotions have come to be today. I mean, think about your crappy job and why you have it. Chances are that you hate the job but need money that you use to buy yourself stuff that makes you happy....like a combination pizza or a spiffy new pair of shoes. The point is that everyone is searching for happiness. That is, everyone is striving toward a certain chemical reaction in the brain. I think we waste a good deal of time trying to satisfy this simple reaction in a complex way. 'So how would you do it then?' you might be asking. I don't know, go meditate and think happy thoughts or something. But once you've figured that reaction out, focus on something bigger than yourself. Create something that might actually be of some sort of use. I've got this life motto stuck in my head: "Never be content." At some subconscious level, I understand and fully embrace the concept but I have not consciously developed it yet. Anyways, I'm thinking we're all just simple boxes full of chemical reactions but there has got to be a way to rise above it. No, God isn't the answer. He doesn't exist, don't be silly. The idea of a soul existing is just as preposterous really. Physicalistic monism is the only Mind/Body stance that makes any sense to me. So when it comes down to it, we are all as insignificant as the atoms we are composed of and life is truly meaningless. In a roundabout way, I have arrived at existentialism. Here's the task we, as humans, are challenged to complete: create meaning where there is none. Hmm..looks like we're already doing this. So we'll just set goals for ourselves now and try to complete them in the short time that we have as the organized matter we call human. Life is a big game of Grand Theft Auto, never-ending, completing stupid missions, for basically no reason. Mother Faa.....Somehow this information is not depressing really. For me, I'm able to handle a situation better if I understand it as best as possible. It gives me a sense of security. Alright, so I just hashed out the meaning of life, deal with it.
