Suicide

Feb 29, 2008

I wrote this my Jr. year in Highschool its a paper that you'd normally write in highschool but i really enjoyed it and i figured others might as well.

It a contrast between today and when ever Dead Poets Society came out. (Good movie by the way)

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Suicides are being committed every day of the week. Many suicidal people don’t get what they’re doing to their loved ones. But the answer is right in front of them. Could it be your fault? With so many suicides these days, we blame anyone we can: Television, video games, music, and movies, which proves no one is responsible. With people always complaining about everyone else they look to find excuses towards everything else trying to make it like they’re not the ones that caused their son’s or daughters death. They don’t want to take the responsibility on their self.
Finding excuses is real easy for people now days they have: music, violent video games, violent movies, and violent television shows, which they can blame for their children’s death. Most adults don’t believe that they could have caused their children’s death, but it is different for children. If a parent or older sibling commits suicide, they think they have done something to help them persuade them to do so. Most children don’t realize what has happen or is about to happen until it is too late.
Many adults have tougher situations to deal with than teenagers. Adults deal with bills, creditors, jobs, and debts. Most adults have major debts and try to gamble their way out of certain debts, but most don’t succeed in winning at casino’s or other gambling places but just get their self into more debt.

“With many death, there is a natural tendency to try and place blame. But, the law recognizes that a legal business, even a casino, does not “cause” a suicide.” (Suicide Is Never Painless, But Who’s To Blame? 2.4)

Teenagers deal with everyday stuff peer pressure, school, going into adult hood/finding a job, and keeping their parents off their back and happy. Could that be why Neil killed himself his father wasn’t happy with what he was doing? Could it be that school was stressful? In the film Dead Poets Society (DPS) why did Neil kill himself? Most people would say his father was the cause of his death by him feeling that he deceived his father so badly he wanted to take his own life. Why would his own father make him feel like he disobeyed his wishes to do something like that? Some others say it was Mr. Keatley’s fault for him giving the old DPS book to him. Some even think it has to deal with school or even his friends.
Mr. Keatley always referring to himself as a Captain from one of Walt Whitman’s poems he quotes most of his poetic gems and makes references to his class and mainly to Neil.

“O ME! O life!… of the questions of these recurring;
Of the endless trains of the faithless- of the cities fill’d with the foolish;
Of myself forever reproaching myself, (for who more foolish than I, and who more faithless?)
Of eyes that vainly crave the light-of the objects mean-of the struggle ever renew’d;
Of the poor results of all-of the plodding and sordid crowds I see around me;
Of the empty and useless ears of the rest-with the rest me intertwined;
The question, O me! So sad, recurring-What good amid these,
O me, O life?” (Whitman)

Was Mr. Keatley trying to get Neil to make a better life for himself other than what his father wanted? Or did he want him dead… or kill his half that always did the right thing and live on the wild side? Mr. Keatley gave Neil the old DPS book for a reason. But no one really knows why. Was it to give Neil a push to disobey his father’s will in doing more stuff after school? For Neil to kill himself because of Mr. Keatley, a new teacher he would have had to do something to make him mad. But how could he be the cause of his death? Neil could be listening to violent music or his friends could have done something, or could have been high school peer pressure. The school he was at was a very strict catholic school and with his father pushing him to do something he didn’t want to do, he was cornered. He couldn’t do anything he wanted without his father knowing and if it wasn’t ok with his father than he had to quit or stop doing what he was doing.
Today’s kids now have Videogames, Televisions, Music, and Movies that all have to deal with violence, sex, and drugs. Once harmless fun of listening to music, now every other word a curse word or mention of sex. Once harmless playful games on consoles now sex, guns, killings, and drugs.
“In an interview with a lawyer about videogames being sold to minors that the gaming industries have rated “M” (for mature) were being sold to kids younger than 17 the most violent games that deal with sex, drugs, gangs, and murderers.” (Violent Video Games 1,4)
Movies that are played now deal with more sex, drugs, guns, and murders. With televisions now the shows they play have to deal with sex, drugs, and death. Doctors or physiologists have been trying to figure out why people commit suicides for decades. Most of the theories are mind set or motivation, people wanting to escape depression, guilt, and stress.

“Some belief’s that suicide constitutes a solution suggests another personality factor that my be extremely important in some cases: the victim’s ideas, beliefs, and ways of thinking. It appears that the way people think about their problems can produce a greater or lesser tendency to depression and suicide.” (Global encyclopedia 331)

Sometimes people think they aren’t loved anymore or don’t fit in to society anymore, so they just stand back and let time go by with out interacting with anyone. Leaving them depressed and lonely and when they think they want someone in their life they push them back out to be by their self. One might kill his or her self for no apparent reason or just to leave everyone thinking that theirs no one out there that would care if he or she died. So they would just take care of it their self and let the ones they loved move on with out them. Some might have multiple disorders that causes them to think in a different way than they usually do simultaneously commit suicide not really knowing why or what their doing to their self.
Neil was the only one that got the whole point of having the meetings in secrete other than Mr. Keatley who made the first Dead Poets Society. So how could the school kick Mr. Keatley out of teaching at the school for the blame of Neil’s death when no one could prove that he help in the act or even tried to. What was really in the book they never really let the viewers look in the book what kind of poetry was in the book? Death, love, and transcendentalism, was it something in the book that could of put a different mind set in Neil about death and suicidal thoughts? Was a book that was twenty years old the cause of Neil’s death, a book that was written to be creative something to disobey the teachers by creating a club that no one knows about.
With suicides being committed every day of the week with at least one suicide every twenty minutes in the United States. Most people don’t really care what they’re doing to their loved ones right before they die until they already have shot or by whatever means killed themselves. People are always complaining about everything else but they don’t want to see the facts that are right in front of them. They think nothing can happen to them or their family till it happens. Most parents are scared after one child has committed suicide feeling that they didn’t give them enough attention, they think their other kids are going to follow their big or little brother’s or sister’s acts and try to keep them from doing what ever they can and smothers them to where they don’t want to be with you any more. The parents take away all the memories of their dead son or daughter from the house and place them some where else because it hurts them to look in their room or at certain stuff that reminds them of their lost child, they could of saved if they were paying attention to the signs.
