Do we have a choice?

Ok so I would normally do such a post in a vlog, but I am burnt to a crisp after a fantastic day at Cedar Point which was followed by an outdoor wedding.
So on the trip back from the point at the only way I could stay awake to drive us all home was to talk to at least one of the other guys. So while everyone else was snoring in my backseat, a great debate began in my car. Do we have free will or are we predestined to who we are and will become?
On my side of the arguement, Free will, I stated that this was something given to us by our creator (whatever fashion you believe such a being exists). Course most of you that are atheistic would argee with Free-will. And yes my freind was arguing the side of Predestination. Stating that if God is Omnipotent then he know what you are going to do and therefore he made it happen so.
I am not exactly sure where I want to go with this post but i would like to hear what others have to say on the matter.
Here is a basic outline of what I believe.
We have free will. If you beleive in God in the sense that most Christians, Jews, Muslims and other groups do, there is one aspect that I believe screams of free will. FORGIVENESS. If you are asked or required to come to God, or in somecases a Holy person, to ask for forgiveness. If God was in complete control of your life then why would you have to go to him/her to be forgiven for an act that you did not choose to do but were willed or fated to play out? What does it say for the human experience if we are not really living our lives, but just taking predetermined steps? Why would a being create us to do nothing but do exactly what it desires. That seems a bit simplistic a view to live by. but there are many people who when something happens they proudly tell you that God had a plan. What a shitty plan. Yes God meant this wonderful person who gave their live to helping feeding the hungry to be shot on their way home for $20 in their pocket. That was a random act of violence and God had nothing to do with it. If you read the story of genesis you will see that God gave mankind the world. We were given domain, complete control over the happening on our world. We are called to be better people, to do good, but we choose how and when we do that. I know this is anything from basic, but does it not cheapen human life to say that we are nothing but a collection of experiences that lead us down a path of pre-selected future experiences that we have no contorl over. Perhaps this is the fact that I am a very individualistic person, but I think I have the choose to do as I please within the constraints of my means.
