I see where you're coming from. Perhaps what we should value is happiness over money? Friendship over success? Or perhaps equal to each other?

It's tough to keep it real as hard as people like you and I do. We're pretty much amazing.

So are we all doomed to a capitalistic life of desire without reward?

I've never seen a picture of the Great Wall like this. I like it. I'm guessing the trees weren't there when the Wall was the main way of keeping the enemy out.

I can see where you're going. But I feel like Jay's not so great dealings play a major role in his downfall too. As for Daisy, I think she, and everything that Jay desires, represent the American dream. But in the end, the only way to achieve that dream from nothing is through corruption, which is antithetical to the American Dream. Its as if Fitzgerald is trying to undercut the idea of the American dream by showing that the one person who still has a level head and who can deal is Nick because he lives a "neutral" sort of life, neither pushing for anyone or working against anyone. It just feels like there is an underlying undercutting of happiness that comes with the type of wealth that Jay has, and Fitzgerald is trying to portray that. So in the end, the American Dream is only possible at the sacrifice of one's spirit?

i'm thinking its somewhat along these lines... jay's kind of the ultimate example of The American Dream. he's a self made man, successful, rich, and popular (in some ways), but Fitzgerald isn't thinking that this is so simple, that the american dream is really possible. jay, even though he does everything for daisy, doesn't really get her in the end, it all falls apart. idk... what do you think?

I just finished gatsby, and it is a great book. Would you mind talking about it with me? I'm trying to get a feel for Fitzgerald's motivation for killing off Jay.
