Élan's Crater

A ball of white energy
left its mark
on denizens of the city
tonight.
From among the stars
life-giving life
illuminated the heroes
in the hall
to remind
those who were there
the quest goes on
not to find a thing
nor a place to build an edifice
but somewhere
to mark
the beginning
of the spread
of the lightness
it brought with it.
Thus Élan was there
to remind us
so we were before
we would be again
and things that never been
would be anew.
A life is but a moment retold,
as highwaymen travel down eternity,
remembered in a ballad or a shanty song.
And so it was that night,
stopping for a while
from his routes upon the inky vastness,
Élan sat
and told of what had been,
what was to be again,
and what was to be anew.
Through all his stories of space
and the dwarf's twisted face
we knew Élan would go forward
lighting hearts with purpose
as ours had been
the night
he left the crater
shining with life
amidst the reflecting city.
